What is a KRD?
KRD-2 (SFIC)

ICLS offers the world's
largest selection of various types of key retainer
devices (KRDs), less cores. Some, such as BEST, Schlage,
Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Medeco and Yale are pictured
below. Even though ICLS has continued to provide these
KRDs at below market prices, it is only because we can
manufacture them completely within the USA with our own
quality control measures and specialized marketing
procedures. Currently we offer 18 different types of KRDs.
KRDs are provided with installation
instructions, fastening bolts and mounting template. KRDs
do not come with the cores (figure-eight
locking devices) that are inserted by the facilities
locksmith in only seconds with the appropriate control
key. Interchangeable cores in KRDs usually match the
facility's existing keying system.
Key Retainer Devices (KRDs) are in the
industry forefront as a proven way to prevent crime by
providing visual authorized accountability.
This means that as a Top Master Key is issued for
legitimate purposes, the employee's key is temporarily
"retained" in the KRD. When they return and replace the
Master Key, the employee's key is released and the Master
Key is again locked into place. This procedure accentuates
safety since accountability is required and
Master Keys stay "on premises." Thus, potential crime and
security vulnerability is lessened. KRDs are precision
machined from solid aircraft aluminum bar stock, contain
stainless steel throw pins for added strength and
security, contain no mounting brackets (proven to be a
security risk) as they are only mounted direct-to-surface
and are manufactured 100% in the USA.

Why
Should I Use a KRD?
Many system
administrators, institutional locksmiths and security
professionals are unaware WHY the Key Retainer Device
(KRD) has proven to be the number one most cost-effective
device to support visual key control. Since the
unfortunate revelations of 9-11, internal security and key
control have become of paramount concern to those in
positions of security authority. Do you know why this
simple, yet important device is a vital arsenal in the
'key control' world? Below are the Top 12 Reasons why:
12 Top Reasons to
Use Key Retainer Devices (KRDs)
Provided by ICLS:
1)
Cost-effective method to keep master keys on
premises |
2)
Reduces expensive building re-keys |
3)
Eliminates unauthorized master key duplication |
4)
Reduces theft from 'rogue' master keys |
5)
Effectively used by colleges, universities,
public schools, hospitals and government
facilities to support necessary key control
policies |
6)
Eliminates key loss off premises |
7)
Allows visual key control of WHO has master
keys out at any given time |
8)
Only ONE cylinder is re-keyed if a change key
is lost |
9)
Stainless steel throw pins securely hold the
top master key until the authorized change key
is returned, and are only mounted
'direct-to-surface' for added security |
10)
Similar to a low-cost insurance policy for a
facility |
11)
Made solely in the USA |
12)
Maintenance free |

What Should I Be Aware Of?
Two
Cautions When Buying KRDs!
1) Make sure
you are not purchasing older stock
(not ever made or sold by
us), that contains brass throw pins!!!
One university found that with extra torque on
the captive key, the brass throw pins broke off
and the master key was free to be removed! This
is the worst scenario for a KRD! We use ONLY
stainless steel throw pins to assure your master
key stays in place until the proper release key
is used. That is what we use.
2) If the
KRD-2 is mounted with a bracket in the
back.....avoid it! Again, it has been proven
that with minimal pressure, it can be broken off
and the perpetrator now has your entire KRD-2,
with keys! As a reminder, this is not something
we ever made and is older stock
(not ever made or sold by
us), as all of our KRDs are mounted
ONLY direct-to-surface.
ICLS is
proud to sell only quality KRDs, as proven by
our track record with the hundreds of colleges,
universities, hospitals and government
facilities using our products successfully for
over a decade.
